Oh to be known!

How do you feel when someone thinks they know you?

Someone who really doesn’t spend any time with you?

Someone who has had little, if any, conversation with you?

They are simply going on what they’ve heard about you—good or bad—and have formed an opinion…

Maybe they’ve even gone so far as to decide who you should be—without regard to who you really are.

How do you suppose God feels when we do that to Him?

So many things have been said about God, sometimes based on a very limited experience with Him.

Maybe simply based on the experiences we’ve had with people who claim to know Him….

We judge Him by our perception of the world, or by our desire of what we want Him to be.

But who is He, really?

How do we know for sure?

How do we get to know anyone?

We spend time with them.

We listen to them, talk with them. We watch the way they live their lives.

How many times have we gotten to know someone after we had already determined who they were….and realized, wow—that person is not at all who I thought they were!

We all have preconceived ideas about God.

No matter where we are spiritually, there is something we already think we know.

So many questions we think we have answers to.

So many questions we don’t think there are answers to.

Maybe even some questions we are afraid to know the answers to….

In some ways, our relationship with God is just like a relationship with have with anyone.

We have to nurture it.

We have to spend time together.

We have to be honest with each other.

Find out what the other person likes, dislikes, expects, desires…

We have to get past all the surface-y stuff to develop a deep, meaningful relationship.

Take off the masks. Be real. Be yourself.

And, let the other person be themselves as well.

In other ways, our relationship with God is nothing at all like our relationships with others.

Only He can be everything we need.

Only He can understand every part of our inner most being.

Only He can fulfil our desires—desires He placed inside of us for His divine purpose.

Only He can give us life….abundant life here on earth, and life eternal.

So, how do we get to know God?

This God who seems so……so whatever it is we think we know about Him?

How do we move beyond knowing about Him to really knowing Him?

It’s simple.

We spend time with Him.

We talk to Him and we listen for Him to talk to us….

In whispers…

In the words of others…

In the lyrics of a song…

In the beauty of a sunrise, or a sunset…

At the edge of the ocean, or on a mountain top….

Within the pages of a Book which He has placed here for the very purpose of getting to know Him.

It’s not an old-fashioned idea book—it is real. It is relevant. It is His personal love letter to each of us.

Read it with an open heart.

We, as believers, must never agree with the lie that tells us we know it all already….that we know Him in full.

We don’t. We can’t.

His is infinite and eternal.

I’ve often thought that the more I learn, the more I realize how little I know…

There is always, always something more to learn about who He is.   It’s what keeps our relationship with Him fresh and exciting.

And for those of you who have not yet believed, or are confused as to what to believe about who He is, you can start today.

Prayer is powerful. It is so much more than asking Him for what you need, or what you want.

Ask Him to reveal Himself to you. He is faithful to honest hearts.

Open a Bible and ask Him to speak directly to you.

You’ll be amazed at what He reveals.

He knows each of us, intimately. Whether or not you believe that doesn’t negate the truth that He does.

He wants you to know Him.
